End of January - 209 species

No visit tomorrow, so today's totals are the same as tomorrow's. Coverage in January has been pretty good, and some squares with no apparent records were visited but I didn't record from them. I will try to do the same coverage in each month in order to find those corners where things grow quietly undisturbed and unseen. There's nothing much going on in the paddock at this time of year and the side of the burn is mostly Canary Reed-grass.

The first target of the year has been reached - 5 lichens. Hopefully I can expand on that a bit, but probably not much! Birds are already half way there, but about par for the course with only Pintail counting as unexpected (an annual drop-in passage visitor almost certainly). Bryophytes at 62 are almost to the target I intend to aim for (75) and which should comfortably be reached. The most gratifying aspect is the 18 new species already recorded in what is one of the quieter periods of the year. Now I only have to record one species every 4 days to reach 100, although in reality I expect to easily exceed that.

Numbers by group:

Taxon Group Records Taxa
bird 47 42
conifer 1 1
crustacean 1 1
fern 1 1
flowering plant 69 60
fungus 43 35

Pintail

A nice species found a couple of days back by Derek Roberston, Pintail isn't a common visitor to the reserve, and I missed it by minutes! Fortunately it was snapped for posterity, as I haven't seen it since either.

To see more of Derek's bird shots have a look at the bird pictures page which has had some tricky photographic gaps filled (Osprey, Treecreeper, Kingfisher) and some fine pics of other species too. Not included (yet) is this fine shot of a Reed bunting

I'll post a few more in a special feature later

The numbers game

Numbers so far from recording have been beyond expectations, with 18 new species recorded and a couple of groups getting close to targets, albeit a low target for lichens!

Lichens, bryophytes and fungi can all be re-focussed towards the end of the year, but I'd like to be at 50 for fungi before end of February, leaving an easier run-in to 100 from autumn. I only hoped to get 75 bryophytes this year, and already getting close with some easy and common species un-recorded. Additionally I hadn't anticipated adding new species quite so easily at this time of year. Long may it continue.

It seems reasonable to expect that the overall target of over 100 fungi species will be achieved fairly easily. Vascular plants, standing at 275, are tantalisingly close to the 300, so I'll be re-doubling efforts in that area. Not sure I can make it this year, but I'll give it a bash. Mostly I think this will be accomplished by covering all the territory at least once a month. Unexplored corners often yield the most unexpected results.

Those taxa which are already romping ahead will soon be de-emphasised in favour of pushing up the counts on creepy crawlies, especially since I took possession of an uber-sweep net from SWT yesterday. I'll be having beetle and fly headaches before I know it.

The counts so far:

Swandering about

I think one of last year's Mute Swan young may be somewhat troubled, either physically or mentally. I had to make my way along the path slowly at the weekend so it could wander back to the water. I am assuming it's the same one that has been feeding in the spillway for a while now

Finally, in pictures, species #200!

By way of my phone to the PC ... Gloeoecystidiellum. Isn't it lovely?

Tuberculate and cracked - cracking typical of genus

2015 - the first 200!

This evening the 200th spot for species recorded in 2015 at Cullaloe was taken by the corticioid fungus Gloeocystidiellum porosum. Fitting that it should be a fungus, though a bryophyte might be equally suitable. Even more so a corticioid one without an English name, or even any sort of real form! Magnificent form under the microscope though. It also seems to be the same species I found but couldn't identify taking the form of a moss a couple of weeks ago.

It comes hot on the heels of Pleuridium acuminatum (to be confirmed), which is a species with few records in Fife and none in NT18 (BBS Bryo Atlas, 2014). If it turns out to be P.subulatum it will still be equally noteworthy, so I don't mind either way. Also today's Marchantia was a new species for the reserve, albeit a common one.

Anyway, the 200, whout further ado ...

Overlooking the obvious

Going to have to be careful with commoner species - found out today that species I added just for the sake of a mini-survey of the orchid meadow hadn't been recorded yet when I thought they had. I'll have to use last year's list as a checklist to make sure I don't simply forget to record something. Having trouble getting images off my camera again, but new additions are:

Strange new moss

Another new moss for me at Cullaloe - two in January! What's strange about it is that it was Ceratodon purpureus. I didn't even take a photo since it's one of the most common mosses in the country. It was only this morning that I discovered I had no record of it at Cullaloe

186 species for the year, total bryophytes all time up to 86.

Cladonia coniocraea

Don't record many lichens, because I don't know what they are, but this one I think is straightforward enough

The agony and the ectasy

It's always nice to find something new, and I was happy to see this little chap growing out of a hidden-away bridge, especially since I have done so poorly for ferns.

Naturally, things aren't that simple and after 2 days with Poland and Frey I still don't know what it is!

Snowdrops plus

A quick run around the car park produced Snowdrops happily flowering, Schistidium apocarpum happily fruiting and Yarrow peeking out between the abundantly growing Creeping Cinquefoil. A handful of bird species in the fields hoisted the number to 180, giving a real chance that 200 will be broken in January. To show the contrast between the ID efforts of last year and the situation now it took until March with a lot of help last year to figure out 180 species!

The back of beyond

A few snaps from between the ponds and the road, where nobody, or at least barely anybody, ventures. I visited this area to do a breeding birds census in 2002 (?), but in the summer making yuor way through the overgrown willows is made worse by a forest of Canary Reed-grass.

Water running below the road into the reserve

Plagiothecium undulatum

Primula, presumed Cowslip until it proves otherwise

Dog's Mercury

Ulota phyllantha

1/3 of target, coverage map

A couple of forays into the wilds of Cullaloe at the weekend saw new squares producing results and some nice additions. The previously mentioned Plagiothecium undulatum was a nice surprise, but also in the same square Cow's Mercury, a species of Spurge. Also in that corner of the reserve, subject to review and awaiting flowers, a couple of instances of Cowslip, with winged petioles, deeply rogose leaves and hair on both sides. I can't see what else it could be, but I'll keep an eye on it. A fern which was also found there is still under scrutiny and hopefully will be identified, at least at some point in the year. Re-visited species included mosses Sanionia uncinata and Ulota phyllantha.

At 170 species, I'm already over a third of the way to 500 this year. With bryophytes on 85, Fungi on 82 and Vascular plants on 273 one of my hopes is to push the totals for these over, or close to, their respective 100s (100, 100, 300).

New moss! Plagiothecium undulatum

Unexpected this morning when I left the house, but new places are the best bet for new species. A brief wander round the NW corner of the reserve produced several new species for the year and several for the reserve list. Plagiothecium undulatum is a new moss for the list - one more step to the big 100. Also approaching the 100, and hopefully to be broken this year is the fungus list. With luck 2 or 3 will make it onto the list from the contents of my collecting box. Also up were the first Garlic Mustard leaves of the year that I've seen, and a Great Spotted Woodpecker

168, with several unknown fungi, an unknown fern and an unknown vascular plant under investigation.

Also for the second time in the last few days were a number of Common Gulls hanging around the pond

Friday roundup

A diary entry for the third Friday of the year. 163 species counted so far and a couple in the box for checking. A few fungi have got away and a couple of bryophytes still need to be checked but already ahead of the January total of 2014!

Today's lunchtime saw a check of Gorse for Byssomerulius corium, which was finally successful on a scabby old plant which has been chopped to keep the path clear. Another corticioid was on there too, but more of that later - should prove straightforward I think as there was one I was already looking for - a Peniophora species maybe (suitably violaceous, or is it pink, or is it white ... ).

Ash

Ash trees have the most fantastic buds. A couple of quickie drawings of a branch from last week in a place at Cullaloe I didn't know there was an ash tree

Coverage and complications

Still having trouble getting images off my camera to PC, which is infuriating. Still, records for the year so far have come from the squares below, and species list is at 147 with fungi and plants leading the line.

Many of the species recorded in the easternmost squares will also be in other ones, but not always. Peniophora lycii (a corticioid fungus) is one example of a species I have only (so far) found in the eastern leg. Additionally that's where the Phragmites is and some other fungi are only recorded from one large dead tree. The wall that runs along the northern edge is covered with mosses, and maybe from the spring there will be some invertebrate action - certainly there are hoverflies.

It's a shame that once the Canary Reed-grass gets going it effectively cuts off the path, which is itself a bit dodgy. Mind you I expect not many visitors get that far anyway.

144 species so far

Records continue to stack up from Cullaloe, with the lion's share of course being known species which are just being relocated or re-recorded, with Canadian Pond-weed and the moss Calliergon cardifolium being two such examples. The latter is particularly happy in the flooded entrance to the spillway!

It's a sign of the times that with less than 30 species of bird recorded Raven already appears on the list. How long before Little Egret also does I wonder?

One of the focusses of the year will be fungi, so it's gratifying to already have 26 in the bag, and some other still in the box! Most of these have been recorded before but there is a growing number of new additions.

Fungi so far:

Auricularia auricula-judae
Botryobasidium subcoronatum
Clitocybe fragrans

Forging ahead fungally

The new species of fungus continue to accumulate, wuth this nice Plicatura crispa abundant on the same beech as the radiant Phlebia was. Another fungal addition came in the form of Coleroa robertiani, a small black fungus on the leaves of wintering Geranium robertanium

Magnificent Moses Myco Moment

On the 3rd, while doing the rounds and taking in some of the remoter 100m squares of the reserve I encountered this incredible burning bush effect. noticing an orange patch on a high branch I investigated further to see this stupendous Phlebia radiata covering large areas of the tree, all in this incredible colouration
